HURRICANE BILL PASSES THE OUTER BANKS, N.C. August 22, 2009 Major hurricane Bill pushed huge waves out ahead of him as he churned his way westward in the Atlantic. Those large waves would make their way to the North Carolina coast and I traveled to the Outer Banks to shoot them. As they moved in, there was some over wash in areas along Hwy. 12 but nothing to bad. Through the day storms would pop up over the Outer Banks and drop some heavy rain at times, nothing to do with Bill's passage. Later on the way home a cold front was approaching the area and I saw a large shelf cloud from a thunderstorm making its way eastward. So, I pulled over and waited for it to move over. Below are photos from the day on the Outer Banks and the thunderstorms on the way home. From the Rodanthe fishing pier in the Outer Banks, large waves from Bill move in and batter the pier.
Looking north from Rodanthe as some storms develop over the northern Outer Banks.
From an area known as S-Turns along Hwy. 12, waves wash up around this house that was in the movie, Nights In Rodanthe.
This house has been through many storms, today its taking a bit of a beating and the sun is shinning.
People stopping along Hwy. 12 at S-Turns to check out the large waves washing ashore.
On the way home from the Outer Banks, a large shelf cloud makes it way eastward in North Carolina.
Looking westward as the shelf cloud moves in and gets bigger.
Nearing its peak, the gustfront pushes on eastward and begins to move over me.
A farmer on his tractor was mowing his yard like a mad man trying to finish up before the storm moves in. I know it is hard to see, but he is on the tractor! All Images Copyright Jesse V. Bass III and
